Safe use of Rondenticides

This image shows the potential and suspected pathways of rodenticide exposure of wildlife in Ireland, which includes primary poisoning (animals which feed directly on the bait) and secondary poisoning (animals which feed on other animals which have been contaminated).

Studies in Ireland and internationally have shown that a diverse range of wildlife are susceptible to rodenticide exposure. If rodenticide compounds enter the food chain at the lower levels (e.g. invertebrates), they can accumulate in the species in the higher trophic levels. Thus, rodenticides can affect wildlife which do not directly consume the bait and which do not feed on target rodents.
